Irish animation has been developing for some time now. Don Bluth based his operations in Ireland for a while, and the government has been supporting work in the area. That support is beginning to bear fruit.

"Coda" is a short animated film directed by Alan Holly. It is a nine-minute hand-drawn production that is voiced by Brian Gleeson (Standby, The Stag, Love/Hate), Joseph Dermody and Orla Fitzgerald (The Wind that Shakes the Barley).

The short film "Coda" tells the story of a drunken fool who stumbles through the city. In a park, death finds him and shows him many things. The film has a bleak look full of vivid color contrasts that recalls paintings such as the famous "Nighthawks" by Edward Hopper.

"Coda" just won Best Animated Short Film at the prestigious SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas and is worth a look. It also has been short-listed for the short film category at The 87th Academy Awards, nominations for which will be announced live on 15 January 2015. The Oscars themselves will be held on 22 February in Hollywood.

Oh, and if you like this short, you also should watch here George Takei's animation created by Irishman Eoin Duffy, "The Missing Scarf." It is quite a bit of Irish fun and philosophy and well worth your time as well.
