"The Animated Adventures of Dr. Who"

"The Animated Adventures of Dr. Who." A "Doctor Who" fan has created 'The Animated Adventures of Doctor Who,' trippy little dip of the toe into the Dr. Who universe.

Fan Stephen Byrne has put together the short clip which sees Peter Capaldi's Doctor time-hopping in a cartoon TARDIS in the manner of those old '70s cartoons that little kids used to get up early on Saturday morning to watch. I almost expect Scooby-Doo to pop up somewhere along the line.

Daleks!
What's fun about the Internet is that "fans" can actually be highly skilled artists who know precisely what they are doing with extensive training and might as well be in the studio making this stuff for television. And, well, sometimes they're doing that as well.

But they are fun!

In this little mini-episode, Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman face haunted suits of armor, fearsome dinosaurs, and the dreaded Weeping Angels. Daleks! There's also a nice little homage to all the many Dr. Whos down through the 50 or so years it has been around.

I read the Dr. Who books as a kid, and though the story has gone on and on and on and on and on since then, it's still the basic storyline, which is kind of cool. I like how in this animation the control panel is somewhat reminiscent of the one from the Jupiter 2 in "Lost in Space," another of my little mini-obsessions.

This is no doubt part of the promotional blitz for the next series of "Dr. Who" on BBC One at 7.30pm on Saturday, 23 August 2014.
